OMAHA (KPTM) — Church leaders and worshippers come together to confront gun violence in the community. Their hope is that increased awareness and support will help pave the way for change.
Sunday night's prayer rally came after several shootings earlier this month killed three people including two teenagers and set off a wave of panic at many Omaha schools.
The service at Pilgrim Baptist Church was one of both discontent for the current situation and hope for the future. Calling the level of violence in the city a crisis, a group of pastors from several North Omaha churches offered prayers and pleas to God and the community to help them make a difference. A packed crowd also heard from school leaders as well as parents and students.
Leaders are asking the public to ask themselves what they can do to have a positive impact. Whether it's becoming a mentor, joining a neighborhood association or watch group or adopting a block through a faith organization.
Leaders were also passing out fliers with resources and information to help battle poverty, guns and illegal activity.
