Over 30 Firearms Collected at Second Gun Amnesty Day

OMAHA (KPTM)- Omaha police are calling their second 'Gun Amnesty' day a huge success.

More than 35 guns and 3,000 rounds of ammunition were dropped off at the corner of 30th and Spencer Streets.  That exceeds the 30 guns collected at a similar event in south Omaha a few weeks ago.

"In itself, it probably doesn't do a whole lot, but as a greater good for all, it's a part of the approach to get rid of the violence," says Sgt. Eric Nordby, a gang unit firearms specialist.

Nordby and community leaders on hand say the event gives neighbors peace of mind.  It also gives those who may be on the wrong path a second chance to do the right thing.

"They don't want it on their conscience.  Some of them quite possibly, they're prohibited," says Nordby.

The amnesty day comes only 24 hours after Omaha police unveiled their loot from the south Omaha event.

At OPD headquarters Friday morning, Rev. Tony Sanders with Family First said the amnesty days were an important part of fighting crime.

"One gun off the street is one less that could potentially be use for a crime," Sanders said.  "Many of the gangs have sat down...and been looking for a way out."

Other community groups like Emerging Leaders, A Call to Action, and Project Safe Neighborhoods also helped plan the amnesty day.

Once collected, the guns are treated as if they'd been found on the street, checked in and then processed.

Two illegal short–shotguns were also dropped off, however, no one that drops off a firearm faces any possession type charges.
