Omaha (KPTM) - The Douglas County Attorney's Office has charged Kyle J Bormann with first-degree murder in the drive-through shooting death of Brittany Williams.
Police say Williams was shot in the head Sunday night with a high-powered rifle from 100 feet away as she sat in her car at the drive-through of a fast food restaurant in the Florence neighborhood.
Bormann was arrested at the scene Sunday night shortly after the shooting when police say he drove his car through crime tape at the shooting scene and ran away with a rifle on foot. He was arrested after a brief chase.
Family members are shocked at their loss, saying that Brittany had a bright future and responsible beyond her years.
"Anyone that knew Brittany loved Brittany, she was just that kind of person," says Valerie Pleasant, Brittany's aunt. "The world has definitely been robbed because she was the type of young woman who would be such an example for all young ladies."
Family members say Brittany was full of drive and determination. She got straight A's, while holding down a full-time telemarketing job. Brittany was also an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at UNO, where she was studying to be a nurse.
"She was into everything. Dance, cheerleading, basketball, she did it all," says Lori McMillan, a family friend.
McMillan says Brittany loved shopping, but was responsible with her money. "For Christmas, she brought all the family members coats, hats and gloves. I mean how many 21 year olds do you know that have positioned themselves to be able to do that?"
Family and friends say they're relying on faith, and each other to cope. "The Lord does things for a reason," says Pleasant. "It's just not, oh, I'm just going to call Brittany home today. There was something he had in store for her so that's the only way you can go on."
