Pederson, Callahan Payoff Debacles Lead To Pelini Clause

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman vows not to repeat history and require the university to grudgingly write multi-million-dollar checks to fired athletic department employees.

That's why a clause greatly reducing the amount of money owed to football coach Bo Pelini if he's fired was a crucial part of contract negotiations.

Perlman says he appreciates Pelini's willingness to accept the mitigation provision. He says such clauses are not common among head coaches in college sports.

Perlman said the impetus for the mitigation clause was the total of $5.3 million in payoffs to athletic director Steve Pederson and football coach Bill Callahan after they were fired last year.

Both were allowwed to keep the money after they got new jobs.
