NWS: Little Sioux Tornado Classified as EF3 Tornado

VALLEY (KPTM) - The National Weather Service in Valley says the tornado that struck a boy scout camp in western Iowa was classified as an EF3 tornado.

A tornado warning was issued at 6:23 for Harrison and Monona counties. The tornado touched down at about 6:35 pm, and then moved southeast into southwest Monona County between Little Sioux and Blencoe. The tornado then moved to near the community of Moorhead in southeast Monona county and lifted. 

The tornado struck the Little Sioux Boy Scout Camp, causing 48 injuries and sadly, 4 fatalities.  

*** A damage assessment team from the NWS in Valley is in the area and has confirmed that the tornado was an EF3, with an estimated wind speed of 145 mph.  Based on a preliminary assessment using aerial imagery, the path length may be around 14 miles. Path width is unknown at this time.  Official details will be provided once the survey team completes their damage assessment later today.  ***
