A former Millard school teacher is charged with first degree sexual assault of a child. Police say she had sex with a student six years ago.
Stephanie Draper taught at Millard north middle school and Beadle middle school. She turned her self in Wednesday morning. Students knew Stephanie Draper as Stephanie Hall. That was her name when she was a reading teacher at Millard north middle school between 1998 and 2002. After that, she worked at Beadle middle school for another five and half years until she resigned in February.
But it was her last few months at Millard north middle school in 2002 and her relationship with a few students that have police involved. Deputy County Attorney, Laurie Burgess says, "Between February 1st of 2002 through April 30th of 2002." The time frame, Burgess says, Stephanie Draper had sex with one of her students. "He was fourteen years of age," Burgess says.
In a statement to investigators, she said she had a "big brother big sister type of a relationship with the victim" who's now 21. Burgess says, "There was sexual intercourse between Mrs. Draper and the victim." The alleged victim told investigators they had sex twice at her house and on another occasion she wanted to but he refused. He also said that he was never interested in a sexual relationship, but thought it would be cool to hang out with her.
"I can't explain why the victim waited six years to report it," Burgess says. The former student says he was embarrassed at the time and couldn't even talk about it, but says he's still bothered six years later.
But the police report shows the victim asked Draper for money in exchange for staying quiet. Burgess says, "The victim was requesting five thousand dollars from Mrs. Draper." Draper didn't have the money instead offered a diamond ring. As of now, draper is the only person under investigation.
Burgess says, "I guess it's not against state law to extort money, there's no law that we can think of to charge the victim with, so at this time the victim is not charged." And according to investigators, she told another student she kept thinking and dreaming about him. School officials reviewed those allegations, but she was allowed to continue teaching.
Millard school district leaders are not commenting on that matter.
Draper's bond was set at a hundred thousand dollars on Wednesday morning. She bonded out an hour later waiving her preliminary hearing. She's scheduled to be in court next week.
