OMAHA (KPTM) - A West Omaha man was arrested Sunday afternoon.

Police say he hit a little girl with his car. It happened just before noon near 91st and Ogden Streets. Police say 19-year-old Michael Gardner hit five-year-old Ayanna Gibbs, then drove away, hitting another car in the process.

Police found Gardner hiding in his basement. They say when they tried to arrest him, he broke out a window and tried to run away. Police found him in a nearby yard and arrested him on multiple charges.

"The guy came up on the curb and he was driving really fast, hit the little girl, backed up, hit the bike again and backed up and sped off," said Brandon Carter, who witnessed what happened.

"I was part of the arrest team and he does appear to be under the influence of alcohol. To what extent, I don't know yet, he'll probably undergo breath sobriety tests," said Sgt. Jeff Baker, with the Omaha Police Department.

Ayanna has some bumps and bruises. She was checked out by medics and is expected to be okay.
