NE GOP Wants End to Unusual Split-Vote System

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - As the possibility looms that Democrat Barack Obama might peel off 1 of Nebraska's electoral votes in his bid for the White House, some people are crying foul over the state GOP's plan to tweak the system so it favors Republicans in future elections.

Incoming state Democratic Party chairman Vic Covalt says he'll do his best to stop the change.

The Electoral College system was established by the Founding Fathers as a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote.

Each state has a number of presidential electors equal to the number of its senators and representatives in Congress.

It takes 270 of the 538 electoral votes to get elected president.

Nebraska and Maine are the only states that do not award all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state's popular vote.

2 of Nebraska's five votes are awarded to the winner of the statewide election, and each of the other votes is awarded to the winner in each of the state's three congressional districts.
