YUTAN (KPTM) - A small community mourns the loss of a teenager killed in a rollover crash. A second teen went to the hospital in a helicopter, after the accident early Tuesday morning in far western Douglas County.
News of the accident spread quickly in Yutan. That's where 18-year-old Andrea Farrens graduated from high school earlier this year. She would have been 19 next week.
It was a drive home turned tragic for Farrens' family and friends. "I was totally shocked. My heart sunk and so did my stomach. I was totally shocked. I couldn't even believe it," said friend Andie Root.
Sheriff's deputies say Farrens was killed around 4 a.m., when the car she was driving went off the road and rolled near 264th Street and West Dodge Road. Farrens was thrown from the car and died from head injuries. "She was fun. She was really funny. You know she was a good friend, fun to be around," said Bo Corvino.
Word of Farrens' death hit hard at Yutan High School. "She loved to hang out. I mean she was just one of those people to make everyone laugh. Just a great person you know," said Derrek Evers.
Students say Farrens was well known in the tight knit community. "She was a really caring person. She would honestly be there for you if you needed her," Root said.
An outgoing, generous and laidback young woman who planned to attend Metro Community College next year. "She was just a great person, loved by all her friends and she is going to be greatly missed," Evers said.
18-year-old Autumn Wieser was a passenger in the car. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators say neither teen was wearing a seat belt, something they say could have made a big difference.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the accident, but deputies say it's possible alcohol played a role.
