One Killed, One Injured in Hit and Run

OMAHA (KPTM)- Omaha police have arrested the man they believe is responsible in an overnight hit and run.

36-year-old Scott Ruffcorn was taken into custody near 5th and Jaynes around 8:00 Sunday morning. He was charged with Misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide and a Felony for Leaving the Scene.

Accident investigators say debris from his vehicle was found near 16th and Storz Expressway. The area is where a fatal hit-and-run occurred just before 3:00 Sunday morning. Officers say two people were outside of their parked cars, changing a tire when they were hit by another vehicle.

33-year-old Vernon E. Burton was pronounced dead following the accident.  An autopsy performed Sunday will help determine how he died.

A second victim, 34-year-old Darrell Avant was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and elbow.

Ruffcorn was also cited for not having insurance. His Ford Explorer also had front end damage, which police believe Ruffcorn received during the hit-and-run.

The officer who made the bust also located a suspect following another fatal hit-and-run last weekend near 37th and Q.
