There are six candidates for Omaha mayor. Now two of them are mapping out how they would target gangs and violent crime.
"[It's] a get-tough, all-out war on violent crime in Omaha."
A seven point crime fighting plan, mayoral candidate Hal Daub outlined his ideas to curb city violence and gang activity in a press conference Monday.
"We need to have an equally sophisticated and organized crime fighting battle plan to stop them."
Ideas that include adding a hometown security commissioner to specifically target gangs and violent crime.
"Every day 24/7 that's what he or she does, work on the violent crime issue in our city and all of the resources we have coordinated in a very focused way," says Daub.
The former mayor says his plan is comprehensive and will not only utilize federal and state laws but incorporate community based programs to tackle the problem.
Mayoral Candidate Jim Vokal says what's not needed is another layer of bureaucracy.
"Adding another staff level at city hall isn't the approach."
Starting Tuesday these ads will showcase his plan to attack gang violence.
Vokal says he plans to add more police officers on the street, tap into the city's community based programs and reach out to kids before they turn to the streets.
"We need to empower the churches, schools and develop truancy programs but moreover it's a community based approach more than a bureaucracy approach," says Vokal.
Both candidates say the foundation is out there to work with community groups before kids turn to gangs.
Four other candidates are running for mayor and include Jim Suttle, Steve Scarle, Jerry Odom and Van Argyrakis.
