COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM)- Voters in Council Bluffs and Carter Lake narrowed the list of potential candidates for Mayor and City Council.
Current mayor of Council Bluffs, Tom Hanafan, is seeking a seventh term. He earned 2,746 votes. Challengers Matt Hartfield received 471 while Helen Sullivan earned 361. The top two vote getters have advanced to the general election on November 3rd.
In Carter Lake, incumbent Mayor Russ Kramer faced off with Fritz Dahlheimer and Gerald Waltrip. Kramer has earned 282 votes. Dahlheimer finished with 178 votes, just enough to edge out Waltrip who had 172.
In what may have been the most interesting race to watch, seven candidates were whittled down to four in the battle for two seats on the Council Bluffs City Council.
Incumbents Darren Bates and Scott Belt were in the running along with Challegers Ed Clark, Melissa Head, Jay Kathol, Jim Nelson and Scott Porter.
Head won the most votes with 1,723. Belt was second with 1,408. Kathol followed with 1,280 votes. Porter received 895, while Bates had 688. Nelson earned 544 votes. Lastly Clark came in with 239 votes.
Just over 10% of the city's registered voters participated. The four with the most votes move on to the General Election next month.
