OMAHA (KPTM)- People from all over Iowa and Nebraska gathered today to honor a firefighter who passed away.
A funeral was held this morning for Michael Collins, of Shelby Nebraska. Collins was a volunteer firefighter who was killed on Sept. 18th while directing traffic on I-80.
"Everyone's staying strong for everyone, but we can also talk to anyone in the town about what's happened," said Shelby Fire Chief, Brian Andersen.
Strength came out in full force as people saluted a firefighter who gave his time, and ultimately his life, to others.
"You couldn't find someone who was so eager to volunteer," said Andersen.
Fire trucks lined the streets as firefighters gathered to pay respect to one of their own.
"I don't think I've ever seen one (funeral) to this magnitude," said volunteer firefighter, Rod Robinson.
"We'll make it through this. It'll take time, but we have the support network and we'll get through it," said Andersen.
