Protesting for Peace

Curt Casper

BELLEVUE (KPTM) - This week is the 10th anniversary of the start the war in Afghanistan. Dozens of demonstrators gathered at Offutt Air Force Base to protest the war.

Sister Marian Klostermann is one of a dozen who protested in front of Offutt Air Force Base. She is tired of war.

"Words have not been sufficient to convince people that war is not the answer and that it is plain insanity," Sister Klostermann said.

Sisters of Saint Francis and other peace organizations are protesting American warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq, just to name a few.

"War is becoming the norm, it is becoming common place," said Sister Klostermann.

Katie Beldt is also protesting. She and her classmates at Briar Cliff drove all the way down to fight for this cause.

"We are just here trying to make a point we don't want these nuclear weapons to be used, but they are still spending the money on them," said Beldt, "That money can be going to a better cause with the poor with shelter, with food, and clothing."

Signs during the protest show the group's message. But as protestors say, it is not just about spreading their words.

"I don't know what else to do besides use my body to say no this is not the way to go," Sister Klostermann said.

Three people will be attempting to cross the line into Offutt Air Force Base. Once they do they will be trespassing. That is when Offutt officials will give them a warning to get back. If they don't, they will face further punishment.

Sister Klostermann and the 2 others were taken into custody Sunday afternoon.

As the Sister's from Saint Francis say their message was heard.

It is a Federal Offense to trespass on government property.

The three could face up to six months in federal prison.

But the Sister's of Saint Francis believe that won't happen.
