Lawmakers Debate: What Age Can Students Drop Out of School

KPTM (Omaha) - Currently in Nebraska at 16 years old, with parental approval, students can drop out of school.

In an effort to keep kids in school longer, a bill was introduced to try and raise the drop out age from 16 to 18.

"at least until they can prove that they can function outside of school," says one Omaha resident.  Another says, "they're not mature enough, they have no since of propriety and what they want to do with their life. You get to the age of 18 you at least have some what of an idea of where you want to go and what you want to do with your life."

But some State lawmakers say it's not that easy.  When you force kids to stay in school an extra two years until they are eighteen, it could cause more of a distraction in the classroom and take away from other students learning experience.

Another issue raised was the cost, and how much is it going to cost law enforcement and county attorney's to force those students to stay in school when they don't want to.

Lawmakers decided to hold off on voting on this bill until some changes are made.
