Iowa Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

OMAHA (KPTM)- Army Sergeant James Skalberg Jr. died Wednesday in Afghanistan. 

The Defense Department says the Emerson, IA native was killed by a bomb near his vehicle.  Sergeant Skalberg was serving his third deployment.

Skalberg is a 2005 graduate of Nishna High School.  He is survived by his wife, Jessica and their 11-month old son.  Skalberg was 25-years-old.

At least 145 military deaths in the Middle East wars are tied to Nebraska and Iowa.
