Omaha (KPTM) – A man is shot and killed near a popular nightclub in west Omaha. His family speaks.
Police say 24-year-old Delayno Wright was shot in the back near the Halo Ultra Lounge around 12:20 a.m. They are investigating what led up to the shooting.
For people at a memorial in Benson Park, their friend's death is saddening. But remembering the good things about him lessens the pain—making room for laughter.
But there are only tears from the family who is now minus one.
"I just got done talking to him yesterday night," says Doryelle Wright who is the victim's sister.
"To know that I won't see him again, it just really hurts," says the victim's mother Barbara Reed.
Family and friends at this memorial describe Delayno Wright as a loyal friend. They say he stood up for people to help make things right.
"Anyone who knew Delayno knows he had an infectious smile and laughter," says Reed. "I don't see how anybody can dislike him."
People who knew Wright say the morning of the shooting he got into a minor altercation. They believe he tried to talk it out.
"He will cool down and if the person keeps bugging him he'll talk to them," says David Carr who knew Wright since they were kids. "He's not the person that just fights anybody."
Wright—who turned 24 in July—was planning on going back to school and in the process of starting his own business.
This was a rise to success that, friends say, came with jealousy.
"It's really sad to see that conflict is handled in gunfire versus sitting down and discussing your differences," says Rayneale Bland.
The family dismisses speculation and assumptions. They say they just want closure.
"The person that did it, trust me they're going to have to answer to God at the end of the day," says Doryelle.
"I don't want him to be remembered as a statistic. I don't want anyone to think that this was some stupid bar fight or some gang violence. This is a good guy," says Spires. "A young man who had his life turned around, who was doing the right things—was making a name for himself."
A local clothing line "Good Life" is raising money for Wright's funeral arrangements. They will donate 25 percent. To donate visit: https://goodlife402.com/rip-delayno-wright.
