OMAHA (KPTM) - The Omaha Police Department says an officer shot and killed a man near 30th and Pratt early Sunday morning.
Police say officers were in the area at about 2:20am when they heard gunshots. The department's ShotSpotter System also detected the shots.
Two officers found a man with a gun. He is identified as 29-year-old Jermaine Lucas. During their encounter, the officers fired their guns. Lucas died at the scene.
The department says the officers have been placed on leave and an internal investigation is underway. A grand jury will also be called to investigate.
Lucas was serving a 5-8 year prison sentence. When he was shot, he was out on a 48-hour furlough, his eleventh since 2010. Police say officials from the Nebraska Department of Corrections called Lucas and talked to him at his home twice around midnight.
