COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM)- It's been a fifteen-year dream to sail the sky in a hot air balloon. And finally at 90-years-old, Mary Brainard's dream came true.
"I'm excited about it," said Brainard.
She's also quite the world traveler. Brainard said she's been overseas and has visited every state except Hawaii.
"You know when I retired I decided that if I didn't stay active, I wasn't going to be active," she said.
"I have a 90 year old grandmother that still gets around as good as I do, sometimes, if not better," said granddaughter Theresa Wilson.
Her chance to feel the heat from the engine and float above land was a goal she had to cross off her bucket list. But was a day many family members thought they would never see. About three years ago, Mary was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
"We were in the hospital more than we were out. My dad was up there and the family was up there. We didn't know what was going to happen, we thought we were going to loose her," said Wilson.
"He [the doctor] told me my lungs were dirty, they need cleaning out. I had never heard of anything doing like that. But anyway he cleaned them out and I am feeling one hundred percent better," said Brainard.
Now healthy, walking tall and climbing aboard her, chariot without any hesitation.
"I feel lucky that I'm still here actually because I guess I'm 90 years old, I never really thought I'd live this long, but I'm very happy that I have," she said.
Brainard said for her 95th birthday she plans to sky dive. She also hopes to one day see the birth of her great-great grandchild and welcome the sixth generation of her family.
