OMAHA (KPTM)- Crews fixed and repaired a broken water main near 78th and Pacific Tuesday in about an hour.
However, nearby residents are just beginning to get a look at the damage.
Kurt Thomsen has a garage full of car parts. "I rebuilt the engine in my civic a couple of years ago."
But one thing the architectural engineering student can't fix, "When I look at that back wall, it doesn't look too stable."
Thomsen's apartments garage unit was across from the water main break Tuesday. While water was pouring on the streets, mud was lining the garages. "It was flooding down the streets and there was mud coming out of all the garages and everything," said Thomsen.
Thomsen got a phone call at 5:30 Tuesday. Thomsen said his garage was the one with all the water damage. "I had to move all my stuff, so I had the privilege of walking through it all."
"(I'm used to having) Insurance in case of a fire, not a mud slide from a water main break," said Thomsen.
Wednesday, Thomsen spent his afternoon taking inventory. He said he had over $1,000 worth of damaged stuff. "I wasn't expecting anything like this."
MUD officials said there are around 400 water main breaks a year, something Thomsen hopes he won't have to deal with again.
MUD officials said they will work with people to help with their claims.
