Bikers Take a Ride Against Child Abuse

OMAHA (KPTM)- About 26,000 cases of child abuse are reported in Nebraska each year.  "Bikers Against Child Abuse" (BACA) is a national organization to help lower that number.

Revving up their engines, these bikers gear up to head for the highway to the danger zone.  But they aren't looking for trouble—they're helping children get out of it.

"No one stands as tall as when they kneel to help a child," said biker "Chef," the vice president of the east Nebraska chapter of BACA.

BACA is a non-profit organization geared towards helping children no longer live in fear.

"These kids are very, very strong.  And we help them bring that strength out so that they can testify, get on with their life, you know, get to be a kid again," said biker "Headbutt," the president of the east Nebraska chapter of BACA.

For the eastern Nebraska BACA riders, state lines don't matter.  They've traveled highways as far as Missouri to help a child in need.

"We work with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children.  But we desire to send a clear message to all those involved with the child that this child is part of our organization and we stand ready to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation and our physical presence," said Headbutt.

They wear their BACA patches proudly, as they should—because it's a strenuous process to earn one.  An FBI background check and an initiation process that could last over two years ensure the chapter is choosing the best possible candidates.

"The thing about an abused child is they've been let down by everyone.  To see those kids come back to life, that's what we all live for.  That's the reward for us," said Chef.

"We want them to know that we have their back.  We are their brothers and sisters, we will treat them like family. They are our family," said Headbutt.

A family riding in style, but with a purpose.

The eastern Nebraska chapter can be reached on their hotline at 402-706-6415  for any child that needs help in the heartland.  You can log onto the BACA web site to learn more about the organization.
