OMAHA (KPTM) - An Omaha police officer on patrol saw people fall into Carter Lake early Sunday afternoon, called for backup and likely saved the lives of two people and a dog.

The Omaha Police Department says Officer Kelly Murphy saw a small boat in the process of overturning at about 12:20.

She called dispatch for assistance. Four fellow OPD officers arrived shortly. All five went into the water to pull two people and a dog back to shore.

Those fellow officers are, Mark Kiley, Bryant Wheatley, Jake Bettin and Nick Andrews.

44-year-old Kay Dunn and her son Nathaniel Nelson were rescued. Their dog Buster was also saved, he went to the Nebraska Medical Center to be dried and held until Dunn can go pick him up.

Dunn, Nelson and Officer Kiley went to the hospital to be checked out for exposure and hypothermia. They are expected to be OK.
