OMAHA (KPTM)- An Omaha woman shares her story of recovery after battling years of alcohol addiction.  With the help of a local charity and a growing faith she's kicking the habit and taking her life back.

Roberta Wells spends her days studying her bible and strengthening her faith.  She's a recovering alcoholic who lost her job and home during the recession.  She's now at the Lydia House looking for a new start.

"We're studying Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.' I just finally believed that I could," said Wells.

Her road to the shelter wasn't an easy one.  Wells said at the age of seven she was introduced to alcohol.  As she became a young teen it turned into a heavy addiction.

"I was pretty much just trying to fit in, you know? Because sometimes being a big girl like me, I don't fit in very well.  So as soon as I get drunk I'm ready to go," she said.

Alcoholism runs in her family.  She tried breaking the generational curse by staying sober for nine years.  But had a relapse.

"That's when I really knew I had a problem.  And that my past was a problem, but I just never knew how to deal with it," said Wells.  "I always had a phrase god will help those who help themselves.  That phrase put me in jail."

Her time in jail guided her to the help she needed.  Through AA and the Lydia House she's discovering her purpose in life.

"I do want to go back to my old comfort zone ways.  But I also know that if I did I'm going to lose more than what I already lost," said Wells.

She's making up for time lost by strengthening her faith so that she can one day help a troubled person find their new start.
