OMAHA(KPTM)--A middle school student from the King Science and Technology Center Magnet school is facing an assault charge after police reports show she burned another student's hair with a lighter.
Police reports say it may have all been because the girl wasn't included in a birthday party she had originally been invited to.
The girl had been standing outside the main entrance of the school waiting for her mom to pick her up when someone told her "wow your hair is messed up", according to police reports.
That's when he turned around and noticed the bottom of her hair had been singed. Police reports say she saw the other student holding a Bic lighter in her hand, still lit.
Most students at the school told KPTM they hadn't heard about this happening, but said it wasn't a normal incident.
"All the people I know, they're not like that," said Makiah Key."They don't care if they don't get invited to a birthday party, it's just a birthday party. It's going to be more like if that person doesn't like you, who cares? You have more friends than just that one person."
School officials couldn't talk about what punishment the student is facing.
But according to Omaha Public School District's code of conduct, a student would be expelled for the rest of the semester for assaulting another student.
For that student and others, a seasoned adult had some advice: "They need to be more focused on what they came here for as far as their education," said Sandra Key. "All of that other stuff just goes by the wayside. You're going to graduate one day and you're not even going to see these people anymore so I think they need to get more involved with their education and move on in life."
