After six years of business in Omaha's Old Market, Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant is closing its doors.
Co owner Bill Whitley cited several reasons for the decision, including parking problems and spotty business.
"It just seemed like the old market is changing, it seems that it's becoming more bar oriented," said Whitley. "The way of the world is going more toward casual dining."
The massive downtown power outage earlier in the week was the main catalyst, according to Whitley. "All of a sudden, with the loss of perishable goods and a couple thousand dollars, it became the catalyst to expedite the process."
Whitley says they had already planned not to renew their lease ending in March. They planned on staying open through March until the outage gave them another financial hit.
Regular customers say it's sad to see the Old Market location go. "We had a nice core following down in the old market, but it just wasn't quite enough to be strong enough to make us say yea were going to keep this going," said Whitley.
Bob and Barbara Fryzek were regulars who would drive from Glenwood, IA to eat at the restaurant. "We were really surprised and disappointed," said Bob Fryzek. "We loved the veal and the reasonable price."
Though the Old Market location is closed, Whitley hopes those customers will make the drive to the West Omaha location near 157th and Pacific. It's been there since April.
Whitley looks forward to putting all of his energy in that store. "It's hard to replicate the 100 year old building, but this is a new spot, it's a little more open and airy in the dining room. We've got a more spacious bar. It's just a lot more comfortable," Whitley described.
Some employees from The Old Market location were offered positions at the !57th and Pacific location.
No word yet on what will take Vincenzo's place.
