Man Tracks Stolen SUV With App

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA (kptm) - Left to his own devices, a Council Bluffs man tracks down his stolen SUV with the help of his cell phone and an app.

The man says he didn't get much help from the police department.  He now suggests everyone download the technology.

"Here was where my car was found," 19-year-old Thadeous Smith tracked down his stolen SUV using his computer.

After he realized his cell phone was trapped inside the truck, he logged on to Lookout Security.  "I sat there and watched my phone drive all the way to this address and then I called the cops back, pinpointed where it was and told them where it was," Smith says.

But Smith says the police department wouldn't budge.  "They said they wouldn't go look for it until I either had seen the car or had the VIN number so they could enter it into the computers," Smith says.

After police told him they couldn't do anything more to help, Smith and his friend decided to take matters into their own hands.  They tracked the cell phone via GPS here to north 37th street where they found the SUV parked in a driveway.  "I was scared because I didn't know if it was a gang member, I didn't know if they were going to get shot at cause I know how when people are mad they just want to go up and take care of it themselves.  I'm like okay, don't do anything cause you got a kid to come home to, just when you see your car, call the cops," Smith's girlfriend, Tiffany Still says.

"It made me pretty mad that I had to go over there by myself with my buddy to a neighborhood that's not to great," Smith says.

"I was afraid that he wasn't going to come home but you know cops wouldn't do anything unless we were a block away so we had to do what we had to do," Still says.

After 40 minutes officers arrived at the house and arrested the suspect.  40 minutes longer than Smith says he would've liked.

But, the police department says it handled the investigation within procedure.  Officers arrested 20-year-old Vernon Williams for the theft and several other charges.
