Man Found Dead in Council Bluffs House Fire

Posted: Updated:

COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM)- According to Council Bluff Fire Chief, Alan Byers, one man died in a house fire Monday afternoon in Council Bluffs.

Smoke, fire trucks, shocked neighbors and sirens filled the street in a quiet Council Bluffs neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. Monday. "We live a couple of blocks away. I saw big black clouds... We saw flames," said Heather Sadler.

"We heard a siren, so I ran to my front window," said Betty Doyle. "I looked out, and I was like-oh my God! The house is on fire!"

The home near 46th and Norwood was covered in smoke for hours. "I'm hoping no one is in the house, I don't know," said Doyle.

Neighbors said, no one was in the home, but a car was running in the driveway, and the driver was no where to be found.

"There's lots of damage to the house, severe damage to the house," said Council Bluffs Fire Chief, Alan Byers, around 5 p.m. "We are trying to get in just to make sure no one's in the house at this time."

It wasn't until around 7 p.m. that Byers confirmed a mans body was found on the second floor.

Right now, it's unclear who the man was or why he was inside the house.

"It's a sad thing, I don't know where they're going to be going now," said Doyle.

Neighbors said a woman and her three kids lived in the home. According to the Pottawattamie County Assessor, Lauri and Mark Vanderwoude own the home. Neighbors said the two are separated.

Police have not released the victims name.

Firefighters are still investigating what caused the fire.
