OMAHA (KPTM) – Construction broke ground a second time along North 144th Street in West Omaha.
Last year crews started at West Dodge and worked up to Franklin, making the major thoroughfare a four-lane road. Now they're finishing the job between Franklin and Corby Streets.
People who live nearby say they can't wait for it to be done, but another year of construction and roadblocks leaves them less enthusiastic.
"It was dangerous getting in and out on a daily basis," said Alison Steck. "Now with them actually working down here, it's probably going to be a lot hairier."
Salon owner, Christina Headley, said that the changes haven't interfered with her business.
"When they had widened 144th before, they worked in a timely manner," Headley said. "We really didn't have any complaints… I mean it needs to be widened that's for sure."
Along 144th Street, the pedestrian trails south of Franklin down to Dodge are open. But if you'd like to ride a bike all the way to Maple Street, you will have to risk traffic or meander through neighborhoods.
The City says that they expect to have the project finished by next November. Steck says that it can't come soon enough.
"We'll look forward to having it completed. When it's all done, it'll be a lot easier."
Nearby, a small westbound part of Blondo is closed during the construction.
