WEEPING WATER (KPTM) - There's still no word tonight (Monday) on what caused a basketball hoop to break loose and plow into a group of fans at Weeping Water High School, but the Superintendent of Schools says the gymnasium is now safe.
Inspectors went to the school Monday to try to figure out what exactly went wrong. An initial investigation states there are no more safety issues with a full report expected to be made available as early as Wednesday. Nobody, however, was allowed inside the gym to get a closer look at any progress made.
Fox 42 traveled to the town early in the afternoon to find out what the community is saying.
"I think we got lucky," said resident Mike Hamilton. "It should be a wake-up call to fix that place up."
Hamilton wasn't there when the accident happened, but he had a friend who was.
"He said it was pretty crazy in there when it happened. Everyone was rushing around and screaming."
Superintendent Ken Hine declined our request for an interview Monday, but did say that his thoughts and prayers are with those who were affected by the freak incident.
Authorities in Weeping Water still haven't released the names or condition of the victims.
