OMAHA (KPTM) - Police in Omaha have arrested a man accused of stealing a truck and other valuables from people in the metro area.
Douglas A. Shearer was taken into custody late last week. He's suspected of taking and destroying a Chevy Silverado owned by Kevin Garbez of Crescent, Iowa during a February snowstorm. For Garbez, seeing his truck annihilated was beyond frustrating because he built it from the ground up.
"It was very heart-wrenching," said Garbez.
Garbez is now planning a civil lawsuit against Shearer and he may not be the only one either. He's certainly not the only victim. Rachel Welty of Omaha also had her belongings stolen and police believe Shearer is connected to that crime as well.
"He stole my check card and managed to spend almost $900 on it," said Welty.
In light of this, Garbez and Welty say their guards will be up next time.
"Do whatever you can to take preventative measures," advised Garbez. "I had preventative measures, but I could have done one step more."
Shearer is slated to be in jail court Tuesday morning.
