OMAHA (KPTM)-Virgil Patlan Sr. spent the twenty-five years on the police force. Now, he sits in his office planning his 2013 Omaha City Council Campaign.

As a vet, he said his beliefs are what drive his ambition to be the next city councilman in district four.

"We as Christians, need to come out and stand in what we believe is right," said Patlan. "We've got to be courageous in that field, and that's what I'm doing. We teach our children that marriage is between a man and a woman, and we don't apologize for that."

As a father of four and grandfather of 17, he said the Omaha Community is at his core and improving jobs in South Omaha is at the top of his list. "That we bring jobs to our community or we take our kids to where the jobs are."

Garry Gernandt is the district four incumbent. "That being good paying jobs, quality and safe housing, public safety, and clean streets," said Gernandt.

Gernandt said he's been in office since 2001, and his mission has been the same for all three terms. "When you're able to do something for someone-get a pot hole filled, manhole covered, sidewalk redone, a dilapidated house torn down, and someone says thank you," said Gernandt. "That's probably work a good chunk of change in my book."

Jacob Perasso agreed, and said that something needs to be done for those living below poverty level. He is the third candidate in the race. "The unemployment rates don't show the true story about the number of people that can't find work to make bills or make rent," said Perasso.

Perasso moved back home from Missouri a few months ago. He said he wants to focus on the working class. "We think it's only through a mobilization of working people that things are going to change."

All three candidates express concern in maintaining a balanced budget and promoting well designed social programs.
