Man Says Roommate Attacked Him With Sword

OMAHA (kptm) - An Omaha man is hauled off to jail after a fight between roommates quickly escalates.  Fox 42 spoke with the victim who says his roommate came at him with a samurai sword.

"He only had like a little three inch pocket knife you know and he's coming at us with this huge battalion…it was like a foot long blade….I was like holy crap is he really coming at me with that thing?  Am I going to be hacked up today, what's going on?"

$30 dollars.  That's what they say started an argument between Daniel Hall and his roommate John Hanes.  It ended with a door in pieces and Hanes behind bars for assault.

"We didn't want to call the police but it just went way too far, he wouldn't go to bed and sleep it off," Girlfriend, Tamara Copelin says.

Hall and his girlfriend say they came home after a night on the town to find Hanes drunk and demanding money.  They tried to ignore him but that's when they say things escalated.  "I just slipped in the bedroom door and we just kind of went in there and hid and then we heard a lot of ruckus out there and then he started banging down the door," Copelin says.

"I'm not sure exactly what set him off or anything like that but he started coming at the door with his bare hands and putting a hole through the door," Hall says.

They say Hanes then went into his room and grabbed a sword 15 inches long and began hacking at their door.  "I was terrified you know he's a really big guy and he was using a lot of force coming thru that door," Copelin says.

Now the two are moving out and looking forward to a fresh start.

Hanes was arrested for assault and battery as well as disorderly conduct.  His trial is scheduled for the end of next month.
