OMAHA (KPTM) – The Old Chicago Restaurant in the Old Market put off pizza making for charity today.

Around 1,000 people turned up to the 1515th Annual Spring Gathering where the kitchen was making the all "fixins" for an Easter dinner.

"It's just the holiday we chose," said Old Chicago GM, Chad Gumbert.

"Everybody will do a Thanksgiving or a Christmas deal.  We chose Easter."

Old Chicago coordinated a shuttle service driving to and from city shelters.

"With the help of Mount Michael we get people bussed from the different centers," Gumbert said.

There were near 100 volunteers.  They sat guests took their order and made sure they left with a gift bag loaded with everyday essentials.

"Assorted fruit, hair-care products, floss, toothpaste. Things like that," said first time volunteer Casey Ellerbeck.

Gumbert said most of the people helping out have done so before.

"I was just talk to a guy that worked for us ten years ago.  And he's still volunteered here every year since then."

One five-year Spring Gathering veteran said she comes for the stories.

"He was in a fire started talking about it, you know I was an ear to listen," Heather Sheffield said.

"I didn't quite understand much of what he was saying, but just an ear to listen and talk.  That was probably the best."

Gumbert said if people want to get involved next year, to give a call around St. Patty's day.

Even though this is the only holiday they shelf the menu, he says Old Chicago goes all out the go all out.

"We focus on this one thing a year to give back to the community.  We do it and we do it right."
