Cat Lives After Being Shot

OMAHA (KPTM) – A cat's leg is broken in Honey Creek, Iowa after it was shot.

Jaime and Eric Tuttle found a stray male cat they call "Fatty" last night around 5 with a gimp leg.  They say he's been calling their front door home since January.

"When I felt his leg…it was limp," said Eric.  "I thought he just broke a leg because he likes to climb a little too high into trees."

The cat is so furry they didn't realize he had been shot until the veterinarian looked him over.

No one had seen him since Monday. Eric was taking out their two Japanese Chin dogs to go to the bathroom when the cat pulled itself up onto a cinder block.

"We don't know why anybody would try to hurt him," Jaime said.  "He doesn't have a mean bone in his body.  But if he survived this, after two days, he wants to live."

Catnip and Tails Rescue sought out medical care, and will be finding a home for the cat.

Jaime met organization president, Tina Ainsworth a month ago at a Petco in Council Bluffs.  She was helping the family place a litter of kittens that the cat is the father of.

"It was a kill shot that shattered his leg and we think we can repair it," Ainsworth said.

"You have to put him back together like a puzzle," said Dr. Barbara Lee. Her husband is performing the $400 surgery at the Valley View Veterinary clinic they share.

"But then you need to have internal fixation with a pin, wire, screws and plates."

The clinic says they see this kind of injury every six to eight months, and that they often go unresolved.

Ainsworth filed a report with Pottawattamie County, detailing that an animal had been abused.

Fatty's new name is Bentley, and he'll be up for adoption with Catnip and Tails Rescue.
