OMAHA (KPTM) - It's a dream come true for the City of Omaha.  The USA Swimming Board announced Saturday the Olympic Swim Trials will return to the Centurylink Center in 2016.

"Oh, it's awesome," said Sam Drusch.

For Omaha, the third time really is a charm.  It served as a host city in 2008 and 2012.  Now, it's getting yet another chance after beating out St. Louis and San Antonio for the top honor.

"A lot of traffic last year, and I think with it returning we could see an even bigger crowd."

A lot of locals like Drusch, who serves as a manager for The Dugout in downtown Omaha, are already feeling the buzz and excitement.  Last year, more than 160,000 strong packed into the Centurylink for the eight-day spectacle.  Some are now wondering if the attendance reflects a first step towards Omaha getting a professional sports team.

"You know, I think Omaha has definitely shown they're willing to build the facilities," said Drusch.

USA Swimming says they expect the 2016 event to be bigger and better than the previous two in Omaha.  In fact, initial plans are already underway for an expanded Aquazone and a new outdoor experience.

"Everybody's just happy to have a big event like that come to town," said swimming fan Susan Ciatti.

In the meantime, fans will just have to wait.  Something that may not be so easy for die-hard swimming enthusiasts.
