OMAHA (KPTM) - Hailstorms can be a homeowner's worst nightmare, especially when massive-sized stones plummet from the sky and onto valued property.  After the last big storm struck in West Omaha, some neighborhoods became a magnet for contractors.

"They're coming to your home and they've called on the phone," said resident Rich Ranallo.

Ranallo says the biggest problem is when companies from out-of-state roll through without a proper license to work.

"Homeowners should be aware of whether those companies are registered with the state.  Do they have insurance?"

One licensed contractor, J.R. Rocha, says scam artists come from just about everywhere.

"They come from Missouri, Colorado and Wisconsin.  It's frustrating because it seems like anyone with a truck and a ladder is all of the sudden a roofer," said Rocha.

Even the Better Business Bureau is seeing shady practices from scammers looking to make a quick buck.  One mailer recently making its rounds claims it will put consumers on a "Do Not Knock" list protecting you against solicitors.  It's something the bureau is crying foul about.

"This is a very elaborate scheme that's designed to generate leads," said BBB President Jim Hegarty.  "In this instance, it's for the individual's company."

The type of scheme some West Omaha homeowners want others to be on guard for.
