OMAHA (KPTM) - Party stores say a helium shortage from last year is turning around, but it's still taking at least some of the air out of retailers.
With graduation season in full swing, hundreds will flock to shops in the coming days looking for the perfect balloons for their graduates.
"We've had a lot of people coming in this year for balloons," said Matt Mangelsen.
Buyer beware, however, the helium shortage that deflated last year's party supply because of lower natural gas overseas is still not quite over.
"We do like to ration a little bit on the really big ones because they take so much helium," said Mangelsen. "I mean you'd be surprised if you knew what a 36 inch balloon took as far as helium.
Mangelsen says helium is on the comeback trail. His store is now filled with small to medium-sized balloons and are ready to be filled for those celebrating special occasions. The market, however, has a long way to go before a full recovery.
"My supplier said, yes, we have plenty of helium for you, but I don't want to say it's exactly what it used to be."
Something that's no laughing matter to party stores until the market completely stabilizes.
