Saint Stanislaus Closes Its School Doors for Summer and For Good

OMAHA (KPTM)- A historic south Omaha school closed its doors Friday, not just for summer, but forever.

St. Stanislaus is one of the three Catholic schools closing this year.

All the students, faculty, and neighbors gathered at 11 AM Friday, and released balloons.

Each balloon had a special message about the school on it.

"There were a lot of messages with heart," said Patty Dasovic. Dasovic has been a secretary at Stanislaus for nine years.  Her entire family went to the school, including her mother.

"There was just an underlying current of sadness the whole year," said Dasovic.

"It's really sad because I'm going to leave this school," said Stanislaus second-grader, Anastasia.

"Their hearts are right out on their sleeves and they're sad," said Dasovic. "They don't want to talk about moving on, they want to stay together."

"It's kind of sad and your happy at the same time," said Elena, a second grader. "Because of summer, but when your school's closing like mine, it's kind of sad."

Students at Stanislaus have options to go to other Catholic schools in their area. Both Elena and Anastasia will be attending Our Lady of Lourdes in the Fall.

"I'm going to miss Saint Stanislaus, it's the best school I've ever went to," said Anastasia.

"We're all eighth graders this year, we're all moving on," said Dasovic.

Dasovic said she's had years and years of memories at the school, and some kids are only getting a few. "Some are moving on, they're changing parishes, they're changing schools."

The school was built in 1919. The building was originally both a Church and a school house.

"Seeing it empty, it's going to put an odd end to it," said Dasovic.

After the balloon release, the group made a circle around the field and said a prayer.

"It's hard to say goodbye," said Dasovic.

"I just want to say that I hope this church really lasts long because it's really special once you get to know it," said Elena.
