SCRIBNER, NE (KPTM) - Cleanup efforts are underway in Scribner following a massive fire at a grain elevator this past weekend.
Crew members from Vacha Excavating were on scene Wednesday clearing out debris and breaking up concrete in an effort to tidy up the area just west of downtown.
"We hope to get everything finished by the middle of next week," said Brady Vacha, the owner of Vacha Excavating.
Vacha, who spoke exclusively to Fox 42 News about how he and his crew sprang into action Sunday to prevent a bad situation from becoming worse, played a key role in getting the fire under control, which was burning near a gas station and a number of businesses. Thanks to Vacha's efforts, firefighters were able to get to hot spots and douse pockets of heavy smoke with water.
"It was a really good feeling," said Vacha. "I'm just glad nobody got hurt."
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. Neighbors seem to think a lightning strike may have sparked it, but that has not been confirmed yet.
