COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM) – Drivers in Iowa will have to share the roads with nearly 15,000 cyclists this week.
The Des Moines Register's 23rd annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa kicked off in Council Bluffs Sunday. This is the first time since 2009 that RAGBRAI started in Council Bluffs.
The bike event attracted cyclists from other states and countries.
Lonnie Hannah traveled from Fort Worth, Texas.
"Really excited when I get here to see the cornfields," Hannah, who is a paraplegic, said. "By the time I'm leaving here it takes me another year to get ready to see the cornfields again."
Hannah said his condition may slow him down, but he learned that it does not stop him from being physically active.
"I just kind of got it. It's not about getting there. It's about enjoying the journey."
Sunday marked the sixth time RAGBRAI started in Council Bluffs. The 40-year-old ride is scheduled to end Saturday, July 27th near the Mississippi River in Fort Madison.
Residents and drivers are advised to watch for cyclists when they open their doors on the streets.
