LA VISTA (KPTM) - The City of La Vista is hoping to make a revitalization project along 84th Street become a reality, but first it needs to secure funding.

The city is considering a plan that would increase sales and property taxes to spruce up run down areas between Harrison and Giles Streets.  The sales tax, which would have to be approved by voters, would go up a half cent, while property taxes may go up by 2.6 cents.

"We have to look at all of our options," said La Vista Mayor Doug Kindig.

Kindig tells Fox 42 News the renovation project has been in the works since 2009 and is designed to attract more visitors, but redevelopment won't be cheap.  The price tag could come in at $40 million or more.

"As long as we know there's light at the end of the tunnel and that something is going to be done that's what's most important," said Katie Svendsen, a manager for The Hair Place at Brentwood Crossing.

If everything falls into place, La Vista could get a new amphitheater, a new lake and a new venue for Summer concerts.  The city warns, however, the finish line could take several years to reach.

The La Vista city council has until October 1st to decide if a property tax increase should be added to the 2013-2014 budget.  The sales tax is expected to appear on next year's election ballot.
