Unadilla (KPTM) – Customers of a family farm are volunteering their time to build a creamery barn.
Laura Chisholm, owner of Chisholm Family Farm says that she and her husband Andy paid a contractor to build a dairy barn, but he didn't finish the work.
For the last year, customers who come to buy fresh eggs, poultry, beef and their signature Jersey cow milk have donated their time on the weekends to help finish the barn.
"Because I love what they do," said Justin Elge, who met the Chisholms at a farmer's market. "I love the natural farming, the holistic plan management."
"It's really touching that people feel so connected to what we do, that they would give up their time," Laura said.
These patrons will stay at the farm in tents and campers, and pack up Sunday evening to head back home for their work week.
Laura says that their customers have also organized an online fund that goes to buying supplies and paying for licensing.
"I don't even see who the donations are from," said Laura, "people started helping and it goes straight back into the barn."
They expect to fully operating by November, a year behind the original date. Laura says she the journey has been the most interesting part.
"Humbling I think is the word. The gratitude I can't even express."
