OMAHA (KPTM)- Omaha Fire Chief Mike McDonnell is retiring after almost 24 years of service. Mayor Jean Stothert said McDonnell reached an agreement with the city Monday.
The announcement comes one day before the vote on the city's budget which originally included layoffs in the fire department. Stothert said she has agreed not to lay off any firefighters or take any trucks out of service until at least July. She will also keep three assistant fire chiefs through the end of 2014.
"These changes are in the best interest of the city of Omaha and will move the fire department ahead in a positive manner," Stothert said.
McDonnell and the city have gone back and forth through heated union negotiations and lawsuits over the last several years.
Battalion Chief Bernard Kanger will be the Interim Fire Chief.
