Former Food Stamp Recipient Supports Ban on Junk Food

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA(KPTM)-Two billion dollars. On junk food. That's how much money food stamp users spent last year. Now lawmakers are taking action.Congress is debating a bill that would limit the type of foods people can buy with food stamps.

Now she's a proud mom, but just a year ago Lauren Domenge was homeless, pregnant and one of many Nebraskans who needed a little extra help. She says she started her healthy eating habits while using her S.N.A.P. card, choosing fresh fruits and veggies over processed foods.

H.R. 3073 would push others down the same path by not allowing food stamp recipients to use the funds on junk food. "We sometimes didn't use the full $200 for the both of us in a month and i attribute that to eating healthily," said Domenge.

But not everyone agrees. Some say a diet of fruits and veggies is tough too expensive."It's basically a question of nutrition or starvation," said Mike Hornacek of Together, Inc.
Domenge hopes others-who haven't given healthy foods a chance-will be moved by her story. And lawmakers who are debating the issue might be swayed to support the change in the S.N.A.P. program.
