COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM)- Things are starting to pick up in the race for mayor in Council Bluffs. Both candidates kicked off the week with a mayoral debate Monday evening. The seat is up for election after its current mayor, Tom Hanafan, has served in office for a quarter of a decade.
Brent Siegrest brings years of experience from the Iowa House of Representatives. When he's not overseeing the nine different education agencies in Iowa, he's out trying to win votes. He hopes to get more public involvement in government.
"The government is open, but nobody is really to engaged in the city and the more people you get engaged the better ideas you get the easier it is to sell change," said Siegrest.
Matt Walsh has been in banking since the ‘80s. Time outside of his executive office is spent at city hall. Walsh has been on city council for the past 18 years. He believes transitioning to mayor will be smooth.
"We're going to do some real positive things, we're going to continue to improve the community and the image of the community and that will be good for in general," said Walsh.
The primary election is October 8th. Since there are only two candidates for mayor both will advance through the primary. There will be seven more mayoral debates to get to know each candidate. The general election will be November 5th.
