KPTM (OMAHA)- It's a theft that's always making headlines, copper.
It seems like the thieves have become more and more desperate.
So is there something we can use that's better than copper?
Not really, said Rich Havorka, of Scott Enterprises.
"I've seen about anything of value on a construction site disappear," said Rich Havorka.
Havorka has worked at the roofing company for 25 years. He said copper is expensive because it doesn't rust.
"I'm surprised every time I hear about it (copper thefts) or have to file a police report," said Havorka.
Havorka said the best alternative to copper when it comes to roofing, siding, or gutters is something called ‘Galvanized steel.'
However, copper is the only metal approved by the city for plumbing.
"The thing you have to keep an eye on the most is the more expensive things like copper," said Havorka.
Havorka said even Scott Enterprises had thefts when it moved to its new location four years ago. He said they installed security cameras and an electronic fence, and haven't had a problem since, but not everyone can do that.
"It's a tough economy-so it's kind of hard to afford those types of measures and security," said Havorka.
So what can be done about copper thefts?
"We've considered a lot of things, like putting up signs, security cameras," said Havorka.
Havorka said the best thing to do, keep an eye out, lock up the copper, and install it fast.
