Dog Rescue Needs Help for Upcoming Winter

Posted: Updated:

GLENWOOD, IOWA (KPTM)-  It's something people don't often want to think about, winter.

Animals are some of the first to suffer when winter weather hits, especially if they are left outside without any sort of shelter.

"We had a case in Iowa not too long ago where a Saint Bernard froze to death," said Genea Stoops.

"St. Bernards are sturdy dogs, they're big dogs.. But when it's cold they need shelter, and they need food, and they need water," said Stoops. "It's heart breaking,  It's really heartbreaking."

It's a love of animals that has inspired Stoops to rescue dozens of dogs and horses for years at her ‘Hooves And Paws Rescue of the Heartland' in Glenwood, Iowa.

"We can only save what we can save," said Stoops.

With colder temperatures creeping closer, Stoops said she is starting her ‘Dog Shelter Drive' earlier than ever.

"It's going to be a cold hard winter," said Stoops.

Stoops is asking for donations of dog houses in good condition, heated water bowls, extension chords, and straw for the dog houses.

She said she will store the shelters, and deliver and set up when needed during the cold months.

"We don't know the circumstances why the dogs are left and there is no good reason. There's just never any good reason," said Stoops.

If your dog is outside all winter, Stoops recommends having an enclosed shelter and straw for the dog to stay warm. Stoops said to make sure to continually check water bowls to make sure water hasn't frozen over.  She also said to make sure your pet gets plenty of food to stay warm.

"We don't know the circumstances why the dogs are left and there is no good reason. There's just never any good reason," said Stoops.
