FDA Issues Pet Jerky Advisory

OMAHA (KPTM) - A new advisory issued by the Food and Drug Administration is warning pet owners about jerky products.  A recent federal study now links more than 500 dog deaths to the presumably safe treats.

"It's very concerning because if it happened to my dog I would be devastated," said Jessica Weaver, a proud pet owner.

The FDA can't say for sure what exactly is causing pets to become sick.  Some veterinarians on the other hand have an idea based on previous experiences.

"In the past there have been some chemical contaminates that have damaged the lining of the stomach and intestines, which caused vomiting and diarrhea," said Dr. Greg Trost, a local vet.

Cases like that are hardly unique.  Last year, the FDA received hundreds of complaints about dog food made in China.  That's why some local pet stores are now providing all natural treats made exclusively in the United States.  The idea is to have a healthier product on shelves with no additives or preservatives.

"They're just not used to the wide variety of seasonings and things that we're used to in our human food," said Dr. Trost.

The FDA has tested more than 1,000 jerky products since 2011 in an effort to solve the mystery.  Experts are looking for pesticides and bacteria like salmonella.

If you believe your pet has gotten sick because of jerky, you're urged to reach out to the FDA.  You can do so at www.fda.gov/
