OMAHA (KPTM) - Burglaries can happen anytime, anywhere and maybe even in your own neighborhood when you least expect it.

"Most of your burglaries are going to happen through the front," said Brian Noland, an Omaha security expert.  "You should always have a dead bolt lock on your front door."

Noland protects dozens of customers every week and on Tuesday exposed to FOX 42 News the common errors homeowners make when they're not around.

"When it comes to drapes and blinds, no matter what the window, you want to make sure they're closed at all times."

Another big mistake people make is selecting an alarm code that's too generic, like a birthday or social security number.  Experts tell us that's a big no-no when it comes to protecting you and your family.

"A lot of times you'll find that the burglar is a friend of a friend of a friend of somebody.  Based on that, they may already know certain things about you."

Noland says that friend of a friend may also try to sneak in through a back door.

"You should have a brace on it.  Either you want to have a 2x4 or a piece of wood extending across the door."

Home security experts also recommend that you equip your place with motion lights at night.  That way, if a bad guy does try to break in, it will more than likely scare him off.
