OMAHA (kptm) - An elderly woman attacked in her home last week is finally back in her house. She said she feels safe knowing the attacker is behind bars.
Police arrested 16-year-old Naushkoniwaheega Hamilton last week for the assault.
Thursday night she celebrated her favorite holiday, by welcoming goblins and ghosts at her doorstep.
78-year-old Janet Jordan said she's lucky to be alive. She said when the teen was beating her she thought she was going to die. Now that she's home, she's energetic and full of life, excited to pass out Halloween candy to trick-or-treaters.
"It feels great and I'm glad he's caught and I feel more relaxed about that and may be a few bumps in the road and I'll get it going here," Jordan said.
Each day, she says she feels a little better. She still has bruises on her face and her wrist is wrapped and every once in a while she has flashbacks of the attack. "A couple of them I had when I heard a funny noise but it wasn't anything, but you know you get kind of eek."
But she said her fears aren't stopping her from enjoying her favorite holiday. "You guys scare the heck out of everybody!" "Trick-or-treat!" She smiles with joy as the children greet her at the door.
"I like this holiday, I really do, always decorated for it and handed out candy, some people do, some people don't, that's their priority but I like doing it."
While Jordan's door is open on Halloween to trick-or-treaters, she wants to warn anyone living alone to protect himself or herself. She said be aware of your surroundings and anyone knocking on the door. "Keep your doors locked, lights on, I guess don't answer the door unless you really know who it is."
Jordan said her lawyer informed her that she should not go to Hamilton's preliminary hearing. However, she says she will be at his trial. She wants to see him face to face and make sure he doesn't get just a slap on the wrist.
Naushkoniwaheega Hamilton, the teenager arrested for the assault, is expected to appear in court for his preliminary hearing November 26th. Jordan's attorney said the defense is planning to move Hamilton's trial to juvenile court. The prosecution is aiming to try him as an adult.
